Resources and Our Services

Early adolescence is a time of remarkable physical, mental and social growth.  Children begin to distance themselves from adults and turn to their peers to learn about the world. Middle schools need to provide a strong sense of community with an academic setting that accommodates the unique learning styles of 11 to 14 year old children. This section will help you learn about the different types of middle schools in New York City as well as help you navigate the public and private middle school admissions process.

The Admissions Process

Although there are neighborhood elementary schools for all New York City residents, there are some disctricts in New York City that have no neighborhood middle schools--forcing parents to apply to several schools which they want their child to attend. Parents will quickly learn that the private and public middle school admissions process is similar, if not more complex, than when they applied to college. You may need to tour many schools, take an entrance exam, complete the application, be interviewed and wait for an acceptance letter. This section will help you navigate this process.

The Admissions Process

In general, students are sent to preschool between the ages of 2 and 4; however, some day care centers have programs that serve children as young as 6 weeks old. Most nursery schools begin accepting applications in September, the year before you children will enroll. Preschools

The good news about living in New York City is that there is a preschool for every child. In fact, there are over 1,000 public and private prekindergarten programs, nursery schools and day care centers in the metropolitan area--all with different personalities. We can help you identify several schools that are well suited for your child’s and family’s needs as well as help you navigate the admissions process.

Although we have collected a tremendous amount of qualitative and quantitative information about the nursery, elementary, middle and high schools in New York City, we realize that our best source of information comes from parents whose children attend those schools. Thus, we are asking parents to complete a brief survey about your child's school. The information will be posted anonymously and used to help other parents determine whether your child's school is a good fit for their children. Please go to the School Finder to find your child's school and complete the parent survey on the school's profile.
